Paraphrase of telegram from the Governor of Hong Kong to the Secretary

of State for the Colonies.

PEC: 22 AUG 12;

(Received, Colonial Office 10.30.p.m.21st August, 1912).

Attack made on Police station at Cheung Chao on August 19th by

over 40 Pirates armed with rifles revolvers.

Three Indian Police were killed, 1000 dollars and also all arms and ammunition stolen, and pawnshop in the village robbed.

They seized steam launch in anchorage and escaped to island

near Macao. It is uncertain whether the island is in Chinese

or Portuguese territory.

At least 100 pirates ane reported to be in this

stronghold.

The Admiral and the Senior officer commanding the

troops concur with me in urging that a strenuous effort should

be made to annihilate gang.

With this object I ask permission to offer cooperation

with Chinese and Portuguese authorities in concerted action, and

to detail for the purpose not less than 400 men of garrison.

The Commodore will provide strong flotilla of destroyers gun-

boats and armed launches. Such expenses of expedition as may be thought proper will be borne by the Colonial Government. Please telegraph instructions.
